[ADV] Defensive Driving Course with MHB Presented by Chevrolet

Advertorial

A while ago, I had the opportunity to test out the new Chevrolet Cruze and had a go at a defense driving course! If you do follow my twitter, you should know how much I was raving about the car and also the thrill I had driving it, pulling safety maneuvers; it was such a delight!

Well, here's a short video ; from the indoor theory work to the outdoorsy stuffs.
Catch me pulling a safety maneuver around the 1:30 mark lol, it was such an adrenaline rush!

So all of us gathered at KGSAS for the theory work, where we were taught about road safety, proper driving ethics and most importantly everything about defense driving. Our instructor for the day was Kevin Low from AADA ;

All of us paid full attention as he did make the session fun, plus we definitely wanted to know more about how we could actually make a difference on the road :) Not only that, but also how to become a safer driver.

So let's start with the question everyone's asking, what in the world is defensive driving? Well for starters, defensive driving is maneuvers obtained by the driver to avoid accidents, to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.

To reduce the risk of driving by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. This can be achieved through adherence to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice of specific driving techniques.

With all these being said and done, with the help of proper knowledge about driving, and of course the car your driving, you can lower the risk of being in an accident yourself!

Throughout the theory session we were thought a few basic things, such as proper sitting position and the right way to wear your seatbelt . The right sitting position would be the driver's back should be laid flat against the back of the seat with the buttocks squarley tucked into the corner then, the arms when fully extended should allow the wrists to rest at the top of the steering wheel. The arms should be slightly bent at the elbow when fully extended for a turn. The purpose of this position is to prevent the arms from being overextended during turns as we are following the push pull steering method. The leg area would need enough knee room to allow the ball of the foot to be on the pedal.

Full concentration!

Always adhere with the 2 second gap rule ; The 2 second rule is a technique for avoiding tailgating and nose to tail crashes.
By keeping a 2 second gap between you and the vehicle in front, you give yourself more time to respond if things change ahead of you. For example, if the vehicle in front has to stop suddenly or collides with something you will not have time to stop your vehicle and to avoid a crash but leaving at least a 2 second gap, your driving will become less stressful and you would be able to stop in time if anything was to happen.

So after the theory session was over, its time to head out to test our new found knowledge on the new uber sexy Chevrolet Cruze!

"Fisheye" Effect camera ; wooots.

Before all the fun and games begin, we were taught about the basics of a car ;
From the battery, water level and types of tires we were thought everything we SHOULD know! Boy was I lost on this topic, zzz.

Keeping your car well maintained is important to avoid faultiness of your car which could lead to a breakdown or worse, an accident!

The exterior.

The Cruze's interior exudes a sexy stylish yet comfortable feeling. The luxury sports interior is ingeniously designed with fully equipped personalize settings, integrated center console, tilt and telescopic steering, audio AUX jack and so much more!

Firstly we had a go at the push-pull steering technique ;

The Cruze cruised through cones set up on a straight line with ease, swaying left to right and left again, without skidding or braking!

Then the next thing we did was the Emergency Braking Accident Avoidance (ABS braking/ collision avoidance) ;

In this exercise, the main goal was to avoid crashing into something, someone, whatever that could be in your way. We were asked to go on full speed, accelerating to the max and then brake when we were told to. Gosh did I enjoy doing this! Haha. Went on full speed (with the Cruze boasting a top speed of 190km/h) and then hitting on the brakes, HARD when I had to stop. FUN FUN! But nevertheless would come in handy in tough situations.

By the way did I mention? The Cruze is equipped with 4-wheel disk brakes with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) which helps to stop the car in a shorter distance while allowing the driver to maneuver away from a collision. Hence, we were cut some slack thanks to the Chevvy Cruze (;

Anyways, the third and last exercise was the Skid Control ;

Photobucket

Main cause of accidents during heavy rain? Skidding. Happens when the driver has lost control of his/her car and start jamming on the brakes. But do you know that braking actually worsens the situation? So we were taught on how to counter react whenever we ever felt like our car was going on a total lost streak lol. For this "trick" Chevrolet Cruze’s ‘Electronic Stability Control’ and ‘Traction Control’ were turned OFF to enable the car to skid (so we could learn how to control a skid).

We girls had a fun time and also very knowledgeable morning well spent with the new Chevrolet cars and also our instructors, learning really useful tips and tricks to Defensive Driving.

A few features of the Chevrolet Cruze that stood out to me was the, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), 4-whell disc brakes with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control, Brake-Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Powerful performance with 6-Speed Automatic Transmission that delivers a maximum fuel efficiency of 17.34km/L . The upscale interior design that exudes a very unique yet classy personality. Stability and Traction Control and best part is, its available in 7 colours, ooh I love the one in "Olympic White".

Price ranges:
Cruze 1.8LT = RM98,716.40 (without insurance)
Cruze 1.8LT Special Edition = RM116,716.40 (without insurance)

Being enrolled in a driving class is more advantage than having learn from our parents. Techniques and proper guidelines are taught as well as rules and regulations on driving. Problems encountered like drunk driving should be avoided and risky to go through this. If charge with DUI ask help from DUI lawyer.
